Demo Days Are Here Again!

Paddling season is upon us…which means Demo Days are here again!

Take advantage of the opportunity to paddle multiple kayaks and learn what fits your paddling needs best during one of our Demo Day events. You never know until you paddle it! We hold multiple events throughout the season, on both weekends and weekdays. Demo Days will be held at either Martin Park Lagoon or at the store on the Rock River.

Does our schedule of Demo Days not meet yours?

We also offer Demo Paddles by appointment. It is important to learn how you fit into a kayak and how your body will react, so we encourage you to come out and try. There is a $20 charge for Demo Paddles, with the fee applied towards your purchase when you purchase a Kayak, Canoe or Stand Up Paddleboard from Rocktown Adventures.

What can you expect during a Demo Paddle?

Rocktown staff will be on hand to walk through any particular kayak, give you some paddling tips, and assist with put-in and take-out. Not only will you get to try out multiple kayaks, but you will also walk away with some knowledge on paddling strokes and maneuvers, and hopefully have a few laughs with like-minded outdoor enthusiasts.

UPCOMING Demo Days

MAY 5 @ MARTIN PARK LAGOON – 2-4PM
MAY 23 @ STORE LOCATION – 5:30-7:30PM
JUNE 1 @ STORE LOCATION – 10AM-12PM
JUNE 22 @ STORE LOCATION – 10AM-12PM
JULY 20 @ STORE LOCATION – 10AM-12PM

6 Reasons to Paddle for Exercise!

Surprise! To paddle, is to actually exercise!

You head out on the water with some friends for some fun in the sun. Maybe to take in the wildlife, maybe to catch a fish or two, maybe to simply enjoy the peace and quiet and sounds of nature. No matter the reason, when you head out on the water, do you realize that you are also engaging in a total body workout as well? Surprise – when you paddle a kayak, you’re exercising!

Yes, that’s right. Kayaking is a great total body workout. Each time you go paddle, you are doing a workout regardless of distance traveled or pace. You go out for fun, and come back with the health benefits. What many gym warriors do not realize is that you can use a kayak as part of your exercise routine. Sure beats riding a bike in one place staring at someone’s backside! With the advancement of pedals in kayaks, you can even pedal your way across the water.

Multiple muscle groups are working when properly paddling a kayak. Shoulders, arms, lats, core, and even your legs are active the entire time you are paddling. You may not realize the muscles are being used, but trust me they are. Not enough cardio you say? Paddle at a faster than normal pace, or head upstream against the current. Your ticker will get a workout.

The next time you want to break a sweat, grab some water shoes. Here are a few reasons why:

  • Paddling is for any Fitness Level or Any Age Group

  • Paddling is a total body activity

  • You can easily combine paddling with other activities for cross training

  • Paddling is low impact – Your knees will thank you

  • Being outside provides more than physical benefits – It’s good for you emotionally, socially & intellectually

  • Its fun! I never dread going paddling – Can’t say the same for going to the gym!

As you can see, paddling is a great total body activity that is good for the mind, body, and soul. The next time you want to break a sweat, think about hitting the water! The gym is there all winter for you.

Inaugural Outdoor Gear Yard Sale

-Saturday, April 20, 2019 @ Rocktown Adventures-

Rocktown Adventures | Inaugural Outdoor Gear Yard SaleCome to sell. come to purchase. Even come to donate!

If you are reading this, you likely enjoy spending time in the outdoors and embrace the benefits of an active outdoor lifestyle.  In my time at Rocktown Adventures, I have learned there are three traits shared by the overwhelming majority of outdoor enthusiasts – aside from their love (and need) for outdoor gear.

1. They are health conscious
2. They like craft beer
3. They care about the environment

It is with this third trait in mind that we are happy to announce we will be hosting our 1st Outdoor Gear Yard Sale, on April 20th from 10AM–4PM. Sell, recycle, reuse, or repurpose any of your outdoor gear. While we are working the booths, we may even enjoy the second trait once or twice!

Do you have some outdoor gear taking up space in your garage or shed? Would you like to turn some used gear into cash or see if you can swap your old gear for someone else’s old gear? Are you looking to get outside more but do not want to purchase new equipment? Or maybe just want to get rid of some outdoor gear in general? If you answered yes to any of these, you will want to come to Rocktown Adventures – Rockford during our 2019 Outdoor Gear Yard Sale. All are welcome!

Vendor Tables

We will have a limited number (12-14) of 6-foot tables available for people to sell their gear. There is no fee to reserve a table, but we do ask for a donation of at least one non-perishable food item. All donated foods will benefit the Cornucopia Food Pantry, located in downtown Rockford. Tables are reserved on a first come, first serve basis. To reserve your table, please send an email to Mr. Terry Bomkamp at tbomkamp@gmail.com. No commercial businesses are allowed to have a vendor table at this time. All registered vendors will be required to fill out a liability form before set up. And as a thank you for coming out, all vendors will receive a 25% off coupon, good for any regular priced apparel, camping or hiking purchases.

Outdoor Gear Donation Box

In addition to the vendor tables, we will have a donation box for outdoor gear, kind of like a hikers box along the Appalachian Trail. Donate any items to the box, which is open to anyone free of charge to grab what they like. Limit of two items per person claimed from the Outdoor Gear Box please. Any gear left in the Outdoor Gear Box after the event will be donated to the Salvation Army.

Permissible Items to Sell

Any sporting goods equipment is permitted. Camping gear, tents, backpacks, kayaks, canoes, paddling gear, used but in good condition clothes or shoes, winter sports equipment, bikes or team sports are welcomed. Guns, ammunition, and archery equipment are prohibited.  Any larger items such as kayaks or bikes will be placed outside the tent behind your table. Your table will be located under the tent.

Hours of Operation

The Yard Sale will run from 10AM-4PM. Set up will begin at 9AM. You are not required to stay for the duration of the event. Sell your gear and take off or come into the store to take advantage of our Yard Sale items.

Earth Day at Rocktown

In addition to the Yard Sale, where people can set up tables free of charge and sell their gear to the public or swap it with someone else, our hiking shoe vendor Oboz is adding to the fun. Their standard practice is to plant a tree for every pair sold, and they are over 1,000,000 trees planted! For Earth Day Weekend, April 20th and 21st, all you need to do is simply try on a pair of Oboz hiking shoes, and Oboz will plant a tree for you. You walk away with a sticker commemorating your efforts to help plant a tree, which we all know is a good thing, and you get to try premium hiking shoes – most of which will be on sale this weekend!

During the Yard Sale, you can also walk away with some knowledge during our FREE In-store Seminars on various outdoor topics such as Backcountry Stove Selection, How to Properly Fit a Backpack and Wilderness First Aid. We will not have a table in the tent, but we will have an assortment of equipment (paddling and winter sports) and apparel available at Yard Sale prices. These items will be clearly marked and located in-store and our storage warehouse next to the store. Do your duty in Earth Day then come over to Rocktown Adventures’ Outdoor Gear Yard Sale! Hope to see you on April 20th!
