Intro Backpacking Trip: Deam Wilderness, Hoosier National Forest, IN

Join us for a beginners backpacking trip over rolling hills and valleys, with stream side campsites, in the Charles C. Deam Wilderness Area of Hoosier National Forest. “The Deam” is the only wilderness areas in central Indiana, near Bloomington. Nearly 13,000 acres with 37 miles of trails are waiting to be explored.

Details: Two night/Three day backpacking experience. This is an Intro level backpacking experience that requires some level of physical conditioning as you should plan for walking 10 miles a day with a 40 lb pack. Your trip leader, Terry Bomkamp, has led multiple outdoor excursions and is a great trail chef. In addition to a memorable outdoor experience, you will walk away with some useful knowledge.
Price: $225 plus travel (on your own), and optional guide gratuity. Pricing includes: trail meals, beverages, snacks; community gear such as stoves, fuel, first aid, and cooking gear; and guiding services.
What to bring: 65-70 L backpack, tent, sleeping bag rated to 15-25 degrees, whistle, fire starter, compass, snacks for hiking, pocket knife, sun and bug protection, personal first aid, 50′ light weight rope, flashlight, sleeping pad, water proof breathable rain gear, clothing, sturdy hiking boots, water bottles or bladder to hold 3 L, eating utensils.
Weather: Expect day time temp’s in upper 50’s with low’s in mid 30’s.

There will be an informational meeting on or around March 14. At this meeting we will review the gear list, confirm meeting time and place near the Charles C. Deam Wilderness Area or debarkation point in Rockford, and answer any questions you may have.
